The Alonso’s found a lost older beagle dog roaming around just a few minutes ago in the Springside Cul-de-Sac. It has no collar. It is brown and black with some whitish graying areas on it. It

is very calm and pleasant, but needs to find its way home. They are holding it.

Carl Demaio presented his "State of the District" speech. He reported on the results of his proposals have produced in the past two years: over $100 million in savings for taxpayers. But while these results are a good starting point, we must continue to push city leaders to enact the remaining reforms in my Roadmap to Recovery Plan.

PQ Clean Up Help

This is a reminder that our next volunteer opportunity is this coming Saturday, Feb. 26, from 9-1. We’ll be picking up trash, removing weeds and planting native plants in a small open space canyon owned by the Friends of los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. We’re meeting at the intersection of Adobe Bluffs Drive and Waterford St., in Rancho Peñasquitos, opposite Adobe Bluffs Elementary School. Bring gloves, water, and sun protection.
Community service signoffs are ok for this project.
RAIN cancels! It might be raining. If it is, we’ll postpone the project until the following weekend.

The Friends of Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve have two volunteer opportunities coming up before the holidays. They are a Street Fair Dec. 5and a Restoration Work Park Dec. 11.

Street FairThe Friends will be staffing a booth at the street fair at Carmel Mtn. Ranch. It's on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 9AM to 3PM. Pat Watkins, the Friends Outreach Coordinator is coordinating this effort. If you can sign up for a 2 hours shift anytime between 9 a.m. And 3 p.m. Contact Pat at pwatkins2008@gmail.com. She will forward full street fair and booth info to anyone who can help out! These hours will count as community service hours for those high school students or scouts needing them.

Restoration Work Party at the Peñasquitos WaterfallIt’s Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 – 1. Come for 2, 3, or 4 hours, whatever you can. Mike Kelly is coordinating this project for the Friends. It’s a continuation of the weeding and planting of native plants at the waterfall in Peñasquitos Canyon. Significant rain can cause cancellation of this event if it’s the day of the event or withing 2-3 days ahead of it. Contact Mike if there’s any question. There’s several different tasks to be accomplished. Come and see the growth of the plants we put in the ground last year! Meet at the end of Park Village Road in Rancho Peñasquitos. It will be a short 15 minute walk to the site. Bring layers of clothing since it will go from cool to warm and bring water and sun protection. You’re welcome to ride your bike in if that’s you’re preferred mode of travel!

2011 Restoration ProjectsIn 2011 the Friends will have two restoration work projects each month. One will be the continuation of planting at the Friends’ Cactus wren restoration in the Santa Luz Grasslands of Black Mtn. Park. The other will be on the Friends newly acquired parcels of open space in Rancho Peñasquitos. We’ll send details over the holidays.

Road map to Recovery plan

When it comes to our City government San Diegans have been let down time and time again. Incremental and limited reforms have not solved our structural deficits, and have failed to restore the public’s trust and confidence. We need major change – and a new approach to achieving that change.

The Roadmap to Recovery is a comprehensive five-year financial recovery plan that balances the city’s budget and restructures long term city finances to eliminate the city’s structural deficit. The plan is projected to save more than $1 billion over five years.

In order to dialogue with residents, our office is hosting a series of community forums. We hope to provide details and get feedback from residents. The forums will be held at the following locations:

Sabre Springs Crime Stats

According to the City of San Diego police department these are the local crime states for Sabre Springs.

Since October Sabre Springs has had 10 residential burglaries and 20 larceny thefts above $400.00. According to the report there have been 25 thefts under $400.00.

In comparison to our neighboring communities Carmel Mountain Ranch has had 14 residential burglaries, 45 thefts over $400.00, and 68 thefts under $400.00. Scripps Ranch has had 27 residential burglaries, 64 thefts above $400.00, and 85 thefts under $400.00

Since the holiday seasons are upon us it is a good idea to make sure you pick up your deliveries ASAP and put them in your house. Or ask your neighbor to get them for you. In the previous years people were going around and taking them.

Also, I received emails from neighbors that tires were being slashed that, I believe, were parked on the street. It maybe a good idea to park cars on driveways or in our garages.

Let's be safe this holiday season and report any suspicious activity. The number for the police non emergency is 858-484-3154.

The good news is I see a lot more police activity in Sabre Springs. I think that may be due to more people calling into the police to report any crime they see. Remember no matter how small if people call in to report issues the more police will patrol our area.

Safety Measures Added To Sabre Springs Parkway

SAN DIEGO -- An electronic speed sign was installed Wednesday on Sabre Springs Parkway in an effort to make the stretch of road safer.
A big white cross on Sabre Springs Parkway serves as an unfortunate reminder about what has happened on the roadway, one too many times. Several accidents have led to at least three deaths in less than two years. One of the most recent incidents was the death of Sandra Kay Kennedy in October 2009. Kennedy was out for a walk when a vehicle jumped the curb and hit her.
"I have to keep attentive to making sure that I can exit if someone jumps the curb," said resident Jim Cosby.
City officials and a local planning group unveiled electronic signs that show drivers how fast they are going. The speed limit is 45 mph, but police and residents say many drivers go much faster. In addition to the new signs, reflectors were installed on the roads to help drivers during night hours.
"Some people travel a little too fast for the curvature of this road. Sometimes it'll go beyond the white bicycle lane," said Cosby.
San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio said the city will continue to work for future improvements and will take more input from residents.
"Maybe put a motorcycle policeman on certain corners," suggested Cosby.
"All residents were very concerned about this stretch of road and they worked together and made this an agenda item and continued to stay on top of it until we got marked improvements from city staff," said DeMaio.
10News asked how much the improvements cost, but city officials did not have that figure available.
The city will continue to take input from residents in the area.

Wright County Egg Conducts Nationwide Voluntary Recalls of Shell Eggs Because of Possible Health Risk

August 18, 2010 - The County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health has been advised by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) of a recall of Wright County Egg shelled eggs. Wright County Egg is taking this action as a precaution because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Please see the attached CDPH consumer advisory.

FDA announces recall f Fresh Express brand Romaine Lettuce

July 15, 2010 - The County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health has been advised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of a recall of Fresh Express Romaine lettuce salad products. The recall notification is being issued because they may have the potential to be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. At this time, there have been no reported illnesses related to these recalled products.

Only the Romaine lettuce salad products with use-by dates of July 8, July 9, July 10, July 11 and July 12, and have an "S" in the product code are affected. No other Fresh Express salads are included in the recall. Below is the FDA website that states the recalled products, which include product labels. Consumers with the recalled products may return the products to their local retailer or discard them to a secure trash container.

July 8, 2010 - The County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health has been advised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of a recall of Ready Pac Foods bagged salads. The recall notification is being issued based on a confirmed positive result for E. coli 0157:H7 in a random sample test conducted by the FDA. At this time, there have been no reported illnesses related to these recalled products.
